The Burmese python can grow up to a length of 23 feet and weigh up to about 200 pounds. In South Florida these astonishingly enormous snakes can be found in parks, backyards, or even a person's house! The Burmese pythons were not brought here by mistake. When the python gets too large, some pet owners will let their python free. Burmese pythons have invaded Florida’s ecosystem in the Everglades.

The Burmese python has an extraordinary lifestyle. All snakes are cold blooded reptiles. The Burmese python likes to stay in warm places like a hot rock. Burmese pythons are carnivores that mainly eat small animals. “ Burmese pythons are carnivores and survive primarily on small birds and mammals” (Piven). Because of the python’s hinged jaw, it can swallow an object as wide as a basketball. Their jaws can open up to about five times the width of its own head. The Burmese python is a native snake to Southeast Asia. They have invaded the South Florida Everglades after careless pet owners have let them free. These large snakes have a very distinctive way of living.

The main python that is found in the Everglades is the Burmese python. The Burmese python is not a native snake to the Everglades. One major factor to this was in 1992 during Hurricane Andrew over 900 Burmese pythons escaped from a pet dealer's warehouse. The Python Challenge is where hunters from around the country can come and hunt pythons in the Everglades for 30 days. “…$1,500 awarded to the hunter who kills the most pythons, and another $1,000 to the hunter who bags the longest one”(Ng).
