Mrs. Grant Booker T. Washington
Booker Taliaferro Washington,a writer during the civil war era, was known as one of the most prestigious writers of his time. Although Booker is looked at to be influential to many, his life wasn’t favorable. He was born a slave on a farm in virginia, April 5th, 1856, although most slaves birth records were not kept. He was born to a black slave mother, and an unknown white father. During his life as a slave he was treated harshly. Luckily he was emancipated when he was nine, which saved him from other severe treatment. As a result of his life as a child, he was able to relate and spread his message to many African Americans across America. Booker T. Washington is looked at a mentor to countless people because of his literature, life, and his role in earning civil rights for African Americans in the late 1800s. At a young age Booker worked many copious jobs, in order to support his family . He worked the entire day long and even sometimes all night. Ruffner teaching Booker, led him to greatness. He was accepted into Hampton Normal Agricultural Institute In virginia. There he met Samuel Chapan Armstrong, the principle of Hampton Institute. Armstrong taught Booker agriculture and brick masonry, as well as the standard subjects. He consumed Armstrong’s practice of character building and utilitarian education. Hampton he met where he remained at the top of his class until he graduated in 1872. After he graduated he went back to Virginia where he taught at an African American School. Booker was inspired to teach at this school because most of the children brought back memories of his childhood, and he wanted better for them. He then decided to attend Wayland Seminary from 1878 to 1879, which is when he was inspired to write his own
