Boko Haram also known as ISWAP is an Islamic militant group dedicating itself to making Nigeria a “pure” Islamic State. Boko Haram has terrorized many parts of Africa such as Chad, Nigeria and Cameroon. Boko Haram was founded in 2002 by Mohammed Yusuf a man who wanted Nigeria to be an Islamic State. The current leader is Abubakar Shekau. Boko Haram can be translated to Western Education is a Sin. Boko Haram is extremely dangerous because of their large deadly attacks. After a 2012 attack that killed almost 2000 people, Shekau released a video saying “I enjoy killing anyone that God commands me to kill.” Boko Haram vehemently opposes Western education and education for girls.
One issue in the fight against Boko Haram is the lack of funding. Without funding and support the African nations affected by the group ISWAP (Boko Haram) the countries will have more difficulty eliminating Boko Haram. The lack of funding is most likely caused by distrust between Western Countries and Nigeria. To help eradicate Boko Haram the African nations must work together as well with other Western countries. So far 5 countries( Nigeria Chad Cameroon Niger Benin) have stepped in to help get rid of Boko Haram. These 5 countries have a strong army and will have 8700 troops total. If we got more nations or more people to help fight it would be easier to fight off Boko Haram.
