This is a religious issue rather than a medical one but it still affects the medical team when it comes to treating a patient who thinks a blood transfusion is unacceptable. Jehovah’s Witnesses have religious beliefs that blood transfusions are unacceptable. They believe that both the Old and New Testaments clearly command them to abstain from blood.
These are the sections of the Bible that make them believe they cannot get a blood transfusion. In Genesis 9:4 it says “Only flesh with its life—its blood—you must not eat.” This makes the Jehovah’s Witnesses believe they can’t get a blood transfusion because that would mean they are “eating” blood from flesh that had life meaning from another human that was perfectly healthy and alive. In Leviticus 17:10 it says “If any man of the house of Israel or any foreigner who is residing in your midst eats any sort of blood, I will certainly set my face against the one who is eating the blood, and I will cut him off from among his people.” This also make them believe that any type of blood that isn’t their own enters their body …show more content…
In Leviticus 17:14 it says “For the life of every sort of flesh is its blood, because the life is in it. Consequently, I said to the Israelites: “You must not eat the blood of any sort of flesh because the life of every sort of flesh is its blood. Anyone eating it will be cut off.” So if they get a blood transfusion they would be taking someone life and they have to respect the life given by God. So they avoid taking blood not only in obedience to God but also out of respect for him as the Giver of life. They have their reasons for not to accept blood transfusion and everyone’s beliefs should always be respected no matter what even if they do not agree with their decision. It’s their life their body and they have the right to do with it what they
