In the fantasy novel written by J.r Tolkien titled the Hobbit. The main protagonist Bilbo Baggins is a dynamic character who changes drastically throughout the duration of his Journey. Bilbo could have easily sat back and be like the rest of the hobbits and not step out of his comfort zone. He displays many characteristics of a hero such as cleverness, loyalty and courage. Bilbo displays the characteristics and values which a true hero embodies but he stays true to himself and stays humble and is not like a typical hero who decides to hide behind a mask.

His countless acts of loyalty and unselfishness are displayed throughout his journey. One instance is when he saved his fellow companions from the deadly spiders in Mirkwood and risking his life and venturing into the den of Smaug. Throughout his journey Bilbo has always remained loyal to his friends. When Bilbo hands the Arkenstone over to Bard it is perceived that he is betraying his friends but he states. ‘ My dear Bard don’t be so hasty I am merely trying to avoid trouble for all those concerned. (PG 272) Thorin then declares Bilbo as a traitor but in hindsight all Bilbo is trying to do is avoid a battle. A true hero knows that fighting is never the answers and a battle should be avoided at all costs.
Tolkien’s ability to show that an average normal character like Bilbo can transcend into a hero relates to the classic image of a true hero. The old phrase ‘From zero to hero’ is certainly applicable to the story of Bilbo Baggins. But it is his Smarts, quick thinking, courage, loyalty and bravery which make him an indisputable and undeniable hero. The quote ‘ I have been dealing with being overlooked my entire life’ (Landian Tomlinson) resonates with the story of Bilbo Baggins.
