Hercules, Ariel, Belle, Mr.Incredible, Marlin, and Beowulf. What do all of those characters have in common? They’re all heroes. After hearing five familiar names, you may wonder who Beowulf is. Beowulf is a hero and this is his story. The graphic novel, Beowulf, by Gareth Hinds is an epic poem made up of three books. Each book features the hero known as Beowulf, the son of Ecgtheow. In the novel, Beowulf faces many challenges and goes on many quests. Time after time, he protects his people from the great dangers in their land whether it’s on his land or elsewhere. The novel How to Read Literature like a Professor by Thomas C. Foster informs readers in chapters one (Every Trip Is a Quest ((Except When It’s Not))) and ten (Never Stand Next to the Hero) on what a true hero in literature is like and what the quest of a true hero is like. The novel states “The oaths I have sworn, these I have kept…” This statement proves that Beowulf ended up completing his quest and protecting his people. Also, on page 84 of How to Read Literature like a Professor, Thomas C. Foster sates that “The plot needs something to happen in order to move forward, so someone must be sacrificed.” The person that ends up being sacrificed in the book is Beowulf but it is only so that the plot can move forward. Also, Beowulf faces everything that makes a hero a hero. In his quest, he was the quester, he had a place and reason to go, challenges he faced on his way to the quest, and he gained self knowledge at the end of the quest.
