Beowulf starts his epic journey by stumbling upon Denmark, ruled by King Hrothgar. The Danes are troubled by an evil monster named Grendel, who shows up every night to the Mead-Hall, Heorot, after the Danish warriors are passed out from drinking, and kills them. Due to the king's older age, Beowulf steps in to help the people of the town, explaining to the King that he owes him for helping his father. Beowulf shows courage standing up to Grindel and the will to fight for the people of Denmark. Beowulf is ready for Grindel to show up the night night and begins to fight him in hand to hand combat. Just like in the stages of the hero's journey, Beowulf has made new enemies that came along and challenged him to new tests. When the warriors begin to awake, Grendel's mother flees back to her cave in the nearby lake, where she is followed by Beowulf and his army. Beowulf takes the first dive into the water, showing his driven mentality, and swims down to the bottom where Grinels’ mother is hiding. Beowulf courageously attacked her with his sword but her poisonous skin melts the blade. Beowulf doesn't give up, he then uses hand to hand combat but fails again. When he finds a sword in the cave he takes it and ends up cutting off her head with his immense strength. As he returns to the surface with his sword and the head, only his true followers are waiting. There is more shock and celebration for him as a hero because he defeated both Grendel and his
