What Would Beowulf Do? Have you ever read a book and a character depicts Jesus Christ? In Beowulf, the main character named Beowulf does exactly this. From earning the title as a savior from the Danes, being abandoned by his twelve followers, and fighting a monstrous dragon, Beowulf earns the right to be called a hero. Alongside his actions that suggest him as Christ, his characteristics such as bravery, honesty, loyalty, and0 superhuman strength bring him even closer. Beowulf is a Christ-like warrior from the beginning of his life till the end. At the beginning of the story, King Hrothgar of Denmark angers Grendel with loud music from his new mead-hall. The evil demon begins terrorizing the Danes and killing them for many years. Beowulf hears of this conflict and puts himself up to the challenge. Unarmed, Beowulf fights and defeats the great Grendel and receives honor and praise for doing so. Seeking revenge, Grendel’s mother kills one of the most trusted advisors bringing alert to Beowulf. After many times of trying to defeat the dragon, Beowulf finally does, but ends up giving up his life to save his people. Jesus dies on the cross, conquering death forever, and saving us similar to Beowulf. Jesus sacrificed himself so that we might live in freedom just how the people of Beowulf will live in freedom from the dragon. Both heroes died so that others could have freedom. “For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.” (Colossians 1:13-14, NIV). Wiglaf builds a barrow in Beowulf’s honor for all the people to remember his great sacrificial deeds just as we have the cross to remember Jesus’s ultimate sacrifice and
