Are there benefits in video games?
In our modern technology-driven society children are spending more time playing video games than ever before. There has been a lot of controversy surrounding the matter of whether this is harmful to a child 's development. Videogames are becoming increasingly popular and look as if they will be around for a very long time. Some people suggest that playing video games, even in moderation, can be detrimental to a child’s academic and social development, but I think a closer look at the possible benefits of gaming is in order.

Though mulitiple studies have been conducted concerning video game addiction, all were performed using small convience samples(Gentile 594). A study by John P. Charlton, of the Psychology Subject Group, Bolton Institute, UK, concludes that the checklist created to identify idividuals addicted to computing activities, which are identified as computer games, internet usage and other computing activities, is inadiquate and likely to return results that give an overestamite off addicted individuals (Charlton 329). The content of many games causing desensitization in young players is also a valid concern not to be ignored. While it is true there are many games on the market that contain violence and mature content, all games relesed are rated by the Federal Trade Commision much like movies and television shows are rated by the Motion Picture Assosiation. These ratings are intended to inform the consumer prior to playing the game of the type of content included. The decision of which games children are allowed to play still falls to their parent or gaurdian.

Regardless of what studies are conducted, or conclusions made as a result, video games are here to stay. With proper moderation and supervision of content many of the percieved detrimental aspectcts assosiated with children playing games can be avoided. With out the label that gameing by children is bad, maybe many more opportunities can be considered and studies conducted to determine the potential benefits for video games. By having an open mind to the posibility that benefits can also be a side effect of gaming, we allow the opportunity to learn approaches to grow with this popular pass
