Paid Internship Analysis

“Of the 75% of students that said they had an internship, 61% had a job offer by the winter of their senior year” (Rodkin, 2014). This is just one of the many statistics that emphasizes the need for internships in today’s business economy. The use of both paid and unpaid internships has been occurring for as long as humans can look back. Originally, internships were more like apprenticeships, in that the employer worked with one pupil to help them gain a specific trade. Now, “As an intern, you’ll gain valuable knowledge of companies and industry culture, trends, and key players, which all contribute to how you’ll choose your future career” (Senderoff, 2013). The addition of an internship to a college student’s resumè greatly increases their chances of receiving a job offer out of college.
As stated by Senderoff, internships have become a necessity for entry-level jobs. She also mentions that the level of competition requires internships so that they can receive the necessary skills and experiences that make them hirable (Senderoff, 2013). The difference comes from whether or not the internship paid them. Many companies do not want to hire people who have completed unpaid internships because they are afraid that they do not have the required experience to begin working immediately. The 37% of unpaid internships is only 1% higher than those who had no internship experience. (Adams, 2012).     I have found that, along with being integrated with graduate recruitment, work experience increases the employability of interns by improving their networking and professional skills, putting them in an advantageous position in the competitive graduate market.
