Prior to this year and becoming a mentor at Carver Elementary, during my 12th grade year in high school I was in a program that allowed me to work as an intern in a 3rd grade classroom at a local elementary school in Virginia Beach. Since I was so fond of my experience there and I generally love working with children I was elated at the fact that I would once again work with children.
Upon walking in on my very first day of not only Univ 111, but my very first day of college and hearing the words “Ok, I would like to let you know now that this is a service learning class.”, I was very confused in many aspects. First off, I wasn’t quite sure what focused inquiry was in the first place and to add on top of that I really wasn’t sure what service learning was. That was until the whole duration of 2 or 3 class periods was spent explaining to us as a class what exactly service learning was. By the end of the power points and videos I was beyond excited that I was in a course that would allow me to go out into the community and get involved with a cause/organization. Casey asking her if I could begin my mentoring on the Thursday after bike week and she promptly responded, “Yes!”. Before I knew it the week the days had passed and Thursday finally rolled around. I was nervous about several things that day. “I wonder how old my mentee is?” “Will they like me?”. Those were all the thoughts that kept replaying in my head as I embarked on my journey to Carver Elementary School. Once I arrived Carver, I was buzzed in by the staff at the main office and an id was created for me. It was time to finally get assigned my mentee.
