A Look Back on Being a Mentor

Prior to this year and becoming a mentor at Carver Elementary, during my 12th grade year in high school I was in a program that allowed me to work as an intern in a 3rd grade classroom at a local elementary school in Virginia Beach. Since I was so fond of my experience there and I generally love working with children I was elated at the fact that I would once again work with children.

Upon walking in on my very first day of not only Univ 111, but my very first day of college and hearing the words “Ok, I would like to let you know now that this is a service learning class.”, I was very confused in many aspects. First off, I wasn’t quite sure what focused inquiry was in the first place and to add on top of that I really wasn’t sure what service learning was. That was until the whole duration of 2 or 3 class periods was spent explaining to us as a class what exactly service learning was. By the end of the power points and videos I was beyond excited that I was in a course that would allow me to go out into the community and get involved with a cause/organization. I was beyond ecstatic

Casey asking her if I could begin my mentoring on the Thursday after bike week and she promptly responded, “Yes!”. Before I knew it the week the days had passed and Thursday finally rolled around. I was nervous about several things that day. “I wonder how old my mentee is?” “Will they like me?”. Those were all the thoughts that kept replaying in my head as I embarked on my journey to Carver Elementary School. Once I arrived Carver, I was buzzed in by the staff at the main office and an id was created for me. It was time to finally get assigned my mentee. I was told that her name is Aniyah Williams and that she is currently a second grade student. When I first met Aniyah she was very quick to open up with me. Ever since then, she has been able to be open and share aspects of her life like what’s going on at home as well as at

My junior year in high school, I became a student mentor in our campus’s peer counseling program. This was an incredibly rewarding experience as I had the opportunity to help freshman students assimilate into our high school dynamic. As a peer mentor, I assisted students with personal problems and mediated issues with teachers in order to maximize their learning experience. I also acted as a role model for my mentees by talking frequently about AP and Honors courses and how to be successful in such programs. I put effort into learning about each individual's interests and goals so that I could expose them to clubs and academic courses that they may appreciate such as the Biomedical Academy or our school’s robotics team.…

At the summer program I was tasked with teaching 3 classes of first graders to type and code. I was actually reading a book for once. Even if I don’t usually get enraptured by many books, this one caught my eye, and I was flying through the pages. Here I was, reading a book about people in robes that can use magic sticks to cast spells. I read on in the book, reading more about how certain people teach the students in robes about certain things they can do with their magic stick. The brown haired boy, which was the main character, was talking to an old man who had lots of experience with the magic sticks that everyone used.…

Mentorship plays such an important role in all of our lives regardless of vocation and interests. Delving into history we see how many of the renowned innovators, actors, politicians, and business leaders were mentored during some stage of their lives. I can recall the names of a few mentor-mentee relationships I became aware of over time - Plato mentored by Socrates - David Letterman mentored by Peter Lassally - Warren Buffet mentored by Benjamin Graham – Steve Jobs mentored by Robert Friedland - Russell Crowe mentored by Tom Sharpin and Bill Gates mentored by Dr. Ed Roberts. Having participated in mentorship at both ends of the spectrum, I know firsthand about its benefits, which include maturity, focus, diligence, accountability and sustained…

I wish to thank you for the opportunity to apply and be considered for the mentor program. I am excited about mentoring next semester because I want to hone my mentoring skills even further be able to help my mentees in a more effective way.…
