Essay On Being A Good Writing Consultant

The key to being a good writing consultant isn’t just about how well you understand grammar and sentence structure. Writing consultants must have knowledge of writing skills, along with the ability to have an open mind. Writing isn’t like math or science in the sense that there is one clear answer to every problem. One essay could easily be turned into twenty different papers, simply by changing the organization. It is up to the writing consultants to help the author express their ideas and strengthen their voice—not suppress it with your own conventions. I would be a good writing consultant because not only am I a strong writer, but I am also an education student, which allows me to apply the knowledge I have attained from my teaching classes to consulting. We’ve all learned the basic rules of English in school. Obviously, I don’t plan on treating my consultees like a class of first graders, however, sometimes those rules need to be dug out from the depths of the student’s brain; this is the consultant’s job. Asking questions that inspire reflection and offering suggestions are great, but you shouldn’t be telling the student what to do. Most of the time, they will know what to change, they just need someone to point them in the right direction. Overall, a good writing consultant should be able to understand that everyone learns differently. This is a concept that is stressed a lot in education classes and one that I have personally grown very fond of. I understand that for some people writing comes easily, but for others a simple essay can be a stressful struggle. Consultants don’t just need to have strong writing skills, but also the ability to step out of their own box and accommodate to the consultee’s specific needs. This is an education model that will be not only be emphasized while I work, but also as a part of my day to day
