A practitioner would use differential reinforcement, a procedure of reinforcing the correct form of behavior while not reinforcing the incorrect form to build the behavior into the desired outcome (Cooper et al., 2007, p. 421). Differential reinforcement gains two results from the one application. It provides results of an increase in the response that is rewarded and a decrease in the responses that match the desired behavior the least. Each response serves as a reinforcer for the next response as well as a discriminative stimulus for the previous response. The learner works on each task until it is mastered. When that is accomplished, the next response is learned until the person reaches the ultimate behavior. A behavior change must consist of responses that are performed in a distinct order, with each response acting as a stimulus for the upcoming response (Cooper et al., 2007, p. 436). A behavior chain can be created to teach a child how to brush their teeth. Walk to bathroom – pick up toothbrush – wet brush – open toothpaste tube – squeeze small amount of paste on brush – brush teeth in side to side
