To clarify, there are two fields of nutrition in today’s society; a dietitian and nutritionist (“Distinguishing Between”). These two careers are different from each other in the aspect of their responsibilities (“Distinguishing Between”). “Only nutritionists that become registered with Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) may legally declare themselves as dietitians or more precisely, registered dietitians (RDs)” (“Distinguishing Between”). Michigan State University offers a degree in nutritional science as well, however I decided to major in dietetics. A dietitian has many different responsibilities. According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, a registered dietitian gives health tips, promotes healthier living, and even help to alleviate some digestion issues (Ansel). Becoming a dietitian requires a lot of hard work, time, and effort. A lot of schooling and volunteer work goes into the profession.
The schooling required for a registered dietitian is four years at a university (“What is a Registered”). Getting a bachelors in dietetics requires taking lots of classes, and some of them are very challenging. For example, some of the supporting discipline courses include human anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, food safety, and a few chemistry classes (“Requirements

More importantly than that, the dietitian needs to be able to explain to the patient what is going on, but at the same time not worry them. “Interpersonal communication competence is an important skill for dietitians because it is the main method by which they conduct their practice” (Cant & Aroni). When Deborah Dillon, a registered dietitian, was asked what the most important traits of a dietitian were, she stated, “people skills, communication skills, and organizational skills”.
