Have you ever not understood the real meaning of something someone said to you? This happens quite often regarding love: it’s not a simple matter. It can be exhibited differently, leading to confusion and in some cases, frustration. You might never know how someone actually feels about you. They might truly love you, or just be playing. Benedick says to Beatrice, “Then is courtesy a turncoat. But it is certain I am loved of all ladies, only you excepted; and I would I could find in my heart that I had not a hard heart, for truly I love none” (Cite act1 scene1). (Shakespeare 13) He is saying that before he went to war, he liked Hero, but was too focused on the war. When the war was over, his thoughts immediately were focused on the beauty of Hero. He can’t think about anything but Hero, showing how deeply he loves her. This is an odd type of love, because he doesn’t know how she acts, instead he fantasizes about her looks and the thought of being with her. A bit later on in the play during the masquerade party, it looks as if Don Pedro had wooed Hero for himself, to the massive disappointment to Claudio. He can barely speak, leading to the others thinking he is sad and sick. But it turns out Don Pedro had actually wooed Hero for him, much to his delight. He says: “Silence is the perfectest herald of joy. I were but little happy if I could say how much. Lady, as you are mine, I am yours. I give myself for you and dote upon the exchange. (Shakespeare 28) What he is saying is that he can’t talk much right then due to complete joy. This all goes to waste when he supposedly sees Hero “cheat” on him and sleep
