The reasons that this book was challenged is there is sexual references, bad language and it's a romantic tragedy. The book has been a famous classic for years. It has also been made into 2 movies.
According to research, many people believe that the book should be banned because of the sexual references in the book. The only sexual reference in the book is the words "took her" and Tom cheating on Daisy. Took her is not a sexual reference. They are just 2 words put together. There is only minor words such as b**** and s***. There is worse words out there and this is not a reason to ban this book. Research shows that this book should be banned because of these words. People are saying worse things now. Should people be banned based off of something that they said?
According to research this book was supposed to be banned because of the love in this book. The love in this book isn’t bad at all. The book is just about Mr. Gatsby having a major romantic crush on Daisy. Also the research says that this book has too much of love between Mr. Gatsby and Daisy. People argue that the book needs some more information that does not involve much romantic chapters. The book doesn't even start out as a romantic book. It just simply starts out as an informational passage about Tom and Daisy. In conclusion, the book is banned because the book has sexual references, bad language , and the romantic tragedy in the book. In my opinion I think that the book should not be banned. This is just a simple book about 2 people being in love with each other. I encourage that this book should not be banned because there is worse in the world today. The information in the book is a tiny issue compared to what's going in the world today. Even though the book is banned, it will always be a classic book and will continue to touch people's

During this instance in 1997, the book was put into the advanced reading list which made it be censored, instead of banned. Even though these are the reasons that were said, there are plenty more that make the book harmful. The fact that the main character is continuously in abusive relationships where she is “happy” until something “bad” happens. For example, at one point she was in an mentally abusive relationship and when she was threatened to be killed, she realized she had to leave because it wasn’t “healthy”. This shows that she was okay with being mentally brought down until she was threatened.…

Novels may contain coarse language or racial themes, and many more topics and have been banned because of these ideas. Simply having offensive content is not a valid reason to ban a book. More classics such as Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, or Sherman Alexie’s The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian have faced bans for, according to Beery, “…exploring racial themes or depicting racism directed at various groups of people.” Racism and prejudice exist in the real world, obviously, and exposing children to these themes shows them reality, which helps them differentiate between fantasy and reality.…

Often times parents will challenge a book for its language and the violence present in the book, because they want to keep their child innocent and protected from the wrongs of the world. While it is a understandable concern, it is ridiculous considering what the average high schooler sees and hears in the halls of their school on a daily basis. Parents like this wanted to ban A…

In a few areas a great book, To Kill a Mockingbird, and many books like it are being banned. To Kill a Mockingbird is a very informative book on what life was like in the 1930’s, but it is still being banned for strong language, “strong content”, and strong cases of racism. Many schools have had kids read that book, but because of recent events a few have started to ban it. Some people believe that they can teach messages like the ones taught from this book, but in a better way, so they make it more suitable for kids to read. Some citizens feel that kids should be introduced to strong topics like this when they are in around 8th grade, which is a very common time for schools to have children/teens to read this novel in school, because kids need to be prepared for the real world early on.…

Some of the reasons for being banned numerous times include offensive language/profanity (including the n-word), racism/racial slurs, unsuited to age group, derogatory towards African Americans and women, violence, and absence of traditional values (Foerstel 197). In the end, the book is still used in classrooms as a constructive educational tool for teaching about learning disabilities and preconceived…

In Love With a Child: Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita The main reason why this novel was banned was due to it’s sexaul views on young girls. The main character of this book, Humbert Humbert, spends the majority of his time having seductive thoughts about many little girls. His obsession with them soon becomes the reason why he even takes jobs. Toward the middle of the novel, he takes a job in a woman’s home and marries her due to the attraction he has for her young daughter who he calls, Lolita.…

The characters use a lot of vulgar language throughout, and there is some sexual content that may make some readers uncomfortable. The sexual content involved does contain some intense details, but it is rare. Also, characters often drink enough to become highly intoxicated, and characters smoke cigarettes during most parts of the story. Personally, I thought this made the book more interesting because it made the story more relatable for the targeted audience (this content may not be relatable for some readers, but this book is meant for an older, more mature audience). But, for some readers, these topics may be viewed as a weakness.…

This book should be banned because the little kid in the book Mickey was naked for most of the book showing this genitals and butt but also the cooks in the book were trying to cook Mickey, they even had a oven ready for him that had his name on it. This is a reason it should be banned because little kids should not be seeing children naked and they also shouldn't be seeing kids being cooked because that is cannibalism.…

Book banning and censoring is something that happens in this country to stop children from being exposed to topics that are sometimes deemed too explicit to be suitable for children. Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, keeps getting banned from the curriculum of a Mississippi middle school. This is happening for the books inclusion of rape and derogatory language, particularly the overuse of the n-word. Many also do not like how some of the characters in the novel are portrayed, and do not realize how this portrayal is very accurate to the time period. Because of the truthfulness of the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, along with every other book, should not be banned or censored because books reflect and bring awareness to real life problems, the practice of banning books violates the First Amendment, and reasons for book banning are often easily contradicted.…

Today’s world is so different than how it was back in the ages of History where everyone was not always politically correct. Some people are offended by the language in this novel, but the truth is it is a part of History that happened and we can’t just pretend it didn’t. The controversy still stands today that the content in this novel is inappropriate and not acceptable or racist. If you believe this or you don’t it still does not change the fact that things in history didn’t happen. If this is the case a lot of things now would be banned.…
