How Bad Can Social Media Be?

Research Question:
How negative can social media be?

Review of Literature: Just how bad can social media be for you? Did you know that it can alter your mood,

emotions, and feelings? Yes, if you think about it, it can. If your feed is full of depressing

things, then you’ll start to feel bad. If it’s full of happy things, then most likely you’ll feel

cheerful. Let’s take a closer look. According to Wikipedia (2016), social media does have a negative effect on people, but

also a positive effect. “Social media users read a set of news that is different from what

newspaper editors write in the press.” They studied tweets from Twitter and saw that 41%

of people focus on the negative things, not the positives. People

Media often report that intense use of the

internet increases the risk of isolation, alienation, and withdrawal from society, when it

really doesn’t. This author concludes that social media may be bad, but also good if you

think about.

Analysis: I found two main ideas about the negativity of social media. They both have to do with

negativity, but the second main idea includes some positive things as well. One main idea

states that social media affects your mood in a bad way, while the other says that it affects

your mood in a positive way. The first main idea also says that social media creates

isolation, while the others states that it helps create bonds between people. Both main

ideas say that social media can increase cyberbullying. The two main ideas aren’t that

similar, but also not that different.

Methodology: In order to test ideas about negativity on social media, this researcher will ask 10 students

that on a scale of 1-10, how bad they think social media is, take the average of all those

numbers and put that as my final result.
