Whether it be football, basketball, or hockey; sports bring large amounts of revenue to their respective Universities year round(Wilson). These athletes increase the popularity of the universities reputation and raise money for the universities, however, the athletes receive nothing out of it. The NCAA Regulations states, “You are not eligible for participation in a sport if after full-time collegiate enrollment you have ever taken pay, or the promise of pay, for competing in that sport” (Beaupre). Many of the top colleges around the world make most of their money though athletic events. Ticket sales, television revenue, jersey sales, promotions and many other sources of income that the athletes make go to the NCAA, the school, the coaches, the event staffs and everyone else involved in the sporting business; except for the athletes that are creating the money for the colleges. Media basketball commentator Dick Vitale suggested in one of his interview that “...the NCAA should invest $1,000,000,000 of the $6,200,000,000 it will receive to broadcast the NCAA men 's basketball tournament and pay the athletes $250 a month” (Eitzen). While this is true colleges make a massive profit off the athletes, without them and an excellent program they would be decreasing their yearly income tremendously. Also they won 't be making enough money for the things they need at the school like books, classrooms, jobs and many other essential things. One argument why people believe college athletes shouldn’t get paid is because they are receiving scholarships. However, they cannot use this money outside of paying for school, they need money to do their hobbies and spend time with friends. College sales are a big part of …show more content…

Evidently, the courts feel that the NCAA is looking out for the athletes and the rules already in place justify why they cannot be paid. What the NCAA constantly brings up is the money they receive does not go into their pockets but back into the schools and programs the NCAA has to offer. Ways the NCAA uses the money is by “increasing the amount of money in scholarships offered” and by “upgrading and refurbishing equipment and facilities” (Steele 522-523). I feel this is a good thing the NCAA is doing but for many college athletes the money they get in grants and scholarships is not enough and they have to get a job. Having to get a job takes away from time they could be out practicing with the team and working on class projects/assignments.…
