WR 121 Ashputtle Analyzed
Growing up as a child we are fed stories of happen endings, fairy tales and moralistic tales that teach us right from wrong. Cinderella, Snow White and even Beauty and The Beast all have hidden messages of triumph, sacrifice and true love, but is there possibly more than we can see? Different countries, authors and religions all have different variations of these magical stories. The story I am going to be focusing on is the story of Ashputtle, which most of you may know as Cinderella. Lets talk about those for a second, while looking in the story it is evident that the Grimm Brothers left a presence of religious context hidden within the text. In Catholicism the Dove is a representation of the Holy Spirit. In this story Ashputtle is hopeless, forever wanting to be treated like her stepsisters but is summoned to be a work slave. The doves are Ashputtles guardian angles, looking after her by helping her clean, cook, and tend to her evil stepmother. The doves are not only her angels but also her hope. Her mother’s spirit is within the tree in which these magical doves live in. Not only if we dissect Ashputtles name we can find the word, being her name is Ash-puttle, but also its what she has to clean, sleep in, and tend to throughout the whole story. Ash is a symbol of mourning, heartache and death. As stated before we know that Ashputtles mother passed away two seasons ago, so the ash is clearly a representation of the grieving of her loss. The Ash all disappears when her future is bright from her mothers help to get her to win over the prince. Her heart heals and she never has to see ash again besides her name which is a representation of her never ending love and longing for her mother that she misses
