Essay On 'As Social Workers Say'start Where People Are At'

“As social workers say, ‘start where people are at.’” This is a very powerful quote from the text that shows the understanding of different perspective. By knowing where people are at, instead of beginning where you are standing, it’ll be more helpful and therefore it’ll bring more people to be opened-minded and be able to engage in the conversation that is being presented. I believe that by starting at where others are standing, rather starting where the speaker are at, will help each individual be more engaged and feel comfortable. For instance, people are on different level of understanding. To start where the audience is at, the speaker would get to hear the different voices that wanted to hear. Not just only being on the balcony and able to know where people are standing at, but to be able to listen to the music and understand the meaning behind it are also important as well. Just by listening to the tone of a person’s voice, you can actually tell if the person is in a good mood or not. For instance, behaviors plays an important role. With a good mood and understanding, things will eventually turn out to be more positive in a conversation. I find this metaphor very interesting and it’s a very good way to explain leadership. This clearly show that to have a leadership skill is to have many responsibility, such as acknowledging all these other thoughts including yours and are able to accept it.
