Artifact Description The Action Research paper that was created in Dr. Dixon’s Action Research Proposal class required intensive research, using and collecting evidence, and useable data. This venture required that I first identify a problem within my school using statistics and indicators; then find solutions by researching empirical studies and analyzing the results. This artifact was my first opportunity to discover some of the duties of counselors where it is necessary to assess basic research. I used data collected from my own school and then determine the needs of students to derive a possible solution to the problem (AR 5.3). Where I was concerned about the general population of students outside of my classroom. I learned one crucial influences on the lack of academic achievement was the high number of absences. Many of the students who miss a notable amount of school are economically disadvantaged who tend to have parents or guardians occupied with long work hours or financial worries that made them less likely to be understanding of the importance of their child’s academic success or attendance. This artifact forced me to broaden my scope of the responsibilities of school counselors. The project provided me with a rational view of program assessment and showed me the necessity of collaborating with other teachers and how to work with administrators to benefit the students we all serve.
