The Army of God There is no one true definition of terrorism. However, one common characteristic used in most definitions is the use of violence or intimidation to achieve some type of goal. Terrorist groups exist all over the world. However, when most people think of terrorism, they think of it occurring in Middle Eastern countries. The reality of it is that there are several terrorist organizations that are a lot closer to home. The Army of God is a terrorist organization that first appeared in the United States in the early 1980s. This group has a goal of eradicating abortions and homosexual relationships in the United States because they believe it goes against their religion. They go about this eradication by violent means. The next known attack was in 1984. This attack consisted of two abortion clinics being bombed by a man who identified himself as a member of the Army of God. In 1988 anti-abortion protesters were arrested outside of the Democratic National Convention. While serving time in jail, they decided to join the Army of God. Many of them later committed crimes in accordance with the beliefs of the Army of God. In 1993, Shelley Shannon, a member of the Army of God, murdered Dr. George Tiller. Dr. Tiller was a women’s health doctor that also performed abortions. Shelley Shannon tried to justify the attempted murder by saying she was, “enforcing God’s will”. In 2003, Paul Jennings Hill was executed by lethal injection for killing abortion doctor John Britton and his bodyguard James Barrett in 1994. Also in 1994, Army of God member John C. Salvi killed two receptionists at a Planned Parenthood in Brooklyn, Massachusetts. These are just a few examples of the violent acts that have been performed by members of the Army of God in the 90s.
