The Death Penalty Since the beginning of time, many people have been known to commit violent crimes such as murder, rape, and robbery. Acts of evil are nothing new under the sun, but over the years, it has become much worse. There is no doubt that the crime rate in the United States is increasing, but why? It could be because capital punishment is no longer in favor of our society. If the death penalty was used more often, maybe it would reduce unlawful acts. The main reason I support capital punishment is so that justice can be served. People who commit murder and rape should be held accountable for their actions. The families that criminals have hurt deserve nothing less than justice. The death penalty could also serve as a deterrent and reduce crime rate. One source contends that, “Scripture makes it clear that the government has the authority to determine when it is to be used” (Chery). The significance of this quotation is that the Old Testament in the Bible supports Chery’s statement about the death penalty. Another source argues that Jesus’ teachings forbid the death penalty because of forgiveness that we are supposed to give to each other. For example, the Sermon on the Mount suggest that criminals should be allowed to go free since we should forgive them (Kunkle). I understand this belief, however, this opposing argument fails to take into consideration that God proposed the death penalty. It is unconvincing because God commanded people who have committed murder and other crimes to be put to
