I. The Search Story When I was little, my aunt had open heart surgery to repair an issue in her aorta. Ever since then I have been fascinated with the human heart, especially the aorta. I used to pretend to be a doctor and walk around the house in a white coat. My aunt would tell me about her surgery, and it always kept me at the edge of my seat. When time came to pick our topics, I naturally leaned towards the aorta. However it was too broad to write one paper on. I chose aortic dissections because they intrigued me the most. I researched many different topics before settling on aortic dissections. It took a while to fully grasp the topic. This is called an aortic dissection. An aortic dissection is rare, but fatal. Over the course of reading I noticed how the author kept saying tear then dissection. It seems that a small tear isn’t really a dissection yet. There are two types of aortic dissections: Type A and Type B (Mayo Clinic Staff). Type A is more common than Type B and can be more invasive too (MAyo Clinic Staff). Since type A is dangerous, it seems fitting that it requires more aggressive treatment. Open heart surgery is very taxing on the body. The patient needs to be able to handle the stress of the surgery (“Treatment”). Aortic dissections are more common in older people (Sotsky). I agree with this. When people get older, conditions they didn’t know they had can become prominent. When aortic dissection occurs in people, surgery isn't an easy treatment. If patients are unfit for surgery, it would be bad to put their body through all that pain and suffering only to be met with more complications because of the surgery. It seems better to take care of your body than hurt it more with
