After Karlie couldn’t recall hardly any information from the first passage she was asked to read a level four passage called, “Amelia Earhart.” She was able to answer all of the concept questions, demonstrating general background information about the topic. When asked, “Who was Amelia Earhart?” Karlie said, “Amelia Earhart was the first lady to fly across the Atlantic in a plane. She then tried flying around the world, but she never return. People think she crashed somewhere in the Pacific Ocean.” Karlie had a 99% accuracy for the words in the passage. It created great conversation before the passage was even read. Karlie was 66% familiar with the prior knowledge questions. She was really excited to start to read the passage. She again read at a 99% accuracy for the words in the passage. She only had three miscues: met/mets, have/has, and the/they. When Karlie was asked to recall the passage, she was quiet for a moment. She started to shrug her shoulders, but after a little positive encouragement, Karlie was able to recall 9 out of 57 details from the passage.
