Essay On Ambition In Macbeth

Ever since he heard the prophecies that promised him power, Macbeth’s mind has been descending into a disoriented state as time passed. In the duration of the story, Macbeth, under the influence of Lady Macbeth, the three witches and his own ambition, has changed from being a rational, levelheaded man to one of questionable integrity. With Macbeth’s coronation, not only does his inner turmoil affect his mentality, but also his behavior and senses. In act one, it all begins. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth start to spiral out of control when Macbeth hears from the witches that he will be king. Lady Macbeth becomes a major driving force when they both decide that killing King Duncan. When Macbeth doesn’t want to do it anymore Lady Macbeth says to him “Art thou afeard to be in thine own act and valor as thou art desire? Wouldst thou have that which thou esteem’st the ornament of life, And live a coward in thine own esteem Letting “I dare not” wait upon “I would,” Like the poor cat i’th’ adage”(Shakespeare,43). Macbeth goes through with the plan to kill king Duncan. Lady Macbeth is still influencing Macbeth. After Macbeth kills King Duncan he comes out of the room with the dagger because he believes that he heard a voice chanting "Sleep no more!...Glamis hath murdered sleep and therefore Cawdor Shall sleep no more. Macbeth shall sleep no more."(Shakespeare,57) Hearing this and not being able to say amen when the servants say "god bless us" made Macbeth a nervous wreck.
