Always Preserving in Code Name Verity
What would you do if you had been captured by Gestapo in Germany? Well, Verity knows this well in Elizabeth’s Wein novel Code Name Verity. After getting caught trying to impersonate a spy, Verity is captured by the gestapo and they make her tell them secret codes of the british. Instead of speaking these she chooses to write them down and tell the story through her friend Maddie. Through Verity’s flashbacks she tells the story of how she and Maddie never gave up even when things got to a point of never coming back.

Originally Verity believes that she will never make it out alive by this godforsaken place. “About the paraffin, kerosene, whatever it is. I do not really believe you have a liter of kerosene to waste on me. Or did you get it on the black market? How do you claim the expense? 1 lt. highly explosive fuel for execution of British spy. Anyway, I will do my best to spare you the expense” (6). As said she talks about them killing her a lot in the beginning, but by the end of her part she is more hopeful. Like when they had dressed her up to go to an radio interview and they treated her alright as she thought at the time. “They really made an effort to make me presentable, as though I were debutante to be presented to the King of England all over again” (128). This explains how she was feeling hopeful and thinking since they were doing all of this stuff to her. In some sense they might be ready to release her. Theses connect on the fact that in the beginning she was not at all hopeful she may get out, but as a result of her going to the radio interview it brings her hope. Since this happens she knows to try and keep persevering to try and make it out of the prison.
Wein’s novel Code Name Verity proves how you should always keep preserving even when things get tough. It’s very important to do this since you won’t be able to get through life if you don’t, since it always throws you a new obstacles and even though it may be tough in that exact moment it will always be better in the end. And Code Name Verity sure shows how theses two women were able to overcome their obstacles such as being in prison, becoming a women pilot and going through losing
