Alex Grey is an artist that is famous for creating works which integrate the various layers of the human body into one picture. He produces works that explore the human body and it's various modes of existence, the figures he depicts map out our material physical body, our internal life forces that drive us and the spiritual body that surrounds us. His work often explore experiences such as love, pain, lust, joy and confusion and attempts to depict the unity or distance felt in our mind, body and soul during these events (Larsen, 2001). His work has been described as a quest "towards an integrative art that visually unites the body, mind, soul and spirit and helps heal the alienation and fragmentation felt between the individual and the world"(Larsen, 2001, p.2). His work look beyond the traditional depictions of what it means to have a body and chooses to look at the functions and underlying forces that drive us and impact our behaviors.
