If your wife could not provide you with children you could marry a slave to bear children with; this child would also be considered a part of the father’s lineage instead of the mother’s. Female slaves would be bought and used to increase the population of nations that suffered great death. Even as a person enslaved you still had rights including the right to be fed, clothed, housed, and have children while still remaining with their owners. As a slave you had the right to marry a fellow slave or someone who was free. Most importantly these marriages were legally sound. Slaves could also achieve an income. Just because you were born a slave it did not mean that you would ultimately die a slave as well.
Slavery is never appropriate; however there seems to be a very distinct difference between internal slavery and external slavery. Slavery within Africa treated the enslaved people with potential opportunities; to be born as a slave did not guarantee you of that status.
