America loves appropriating black culture — even when black people themselves, at times, don’t receive much love from America. From dreadlocks to dashikis, white America has taken black traditions and used them for their own gain by failing to give proper credit, ignoring historical context or blatantly perpetuating stereotypes. Culture denotes to the sum of the total values, norms and beliefs of a given group of people. It defines the group and differentiates itself from other groups. When two different cultures come together, different types of cultural appropriations occur. These include transculturation, cultural dominance and cultural exploitation. The appropriation between the white and black cultures, resulting in the African American culture, is defined by cultural dominance and exploitation. To support this argument, I will conduct a research on African Americans to get their views on the results of cultural appropriation to them. I will structure research questions which will help me get the responses which will support this claim. To avoid biasness, I will also involve whites in the study and request for their honest opinions on the issue. My research questions will consist of questions like, “What is your general take on cultural appropriations? How has the American culture impacted your life? Do you think that the course of the African American culture is inclusive of the cultural aspects of each culture? Is there anything you would change about it or would like changed about it?” The questions will be open ended so as to let the respondents express their views with no restrictions.
