Picking when you are going to move is not always possible, particularly if a job requires you to move at a specific time. If, though, you have the option to decide exactly when you want to move, you may want to consider the pros and cons of moving during specific times of the year, especially if you are moving a significant distance from your current home.

This is especially true if you have children. They do not have to be the only new kid in the neighborhood. Plus, when school starts, they will not be the only new kid in their class.
Adjustment Time
If you have children, moving during the summer will allow the child more time to adjust before school starts. When moving during the school year, the kid generally moves and starts school right away. By moving at least a couple of weeks before school starts, particularly if you are moving across the country, the child can have time to adjust to the new home and the new neighborhood before starting at a new school. Of course, time to adjust also sometimes means more time to complain about the move and about having to leave their friends behind.
While summer is generally considered a good time to move when you have school-age children, there are some who would argue that waiting until a little later in the school year is a better idea. Then the teachers are not dealing with new school year stresses and can better focus on helping the student to feel comfortable.
