Achilles and Beowulf wanted nothing more than to have glory. With Achilles, his only reason for being in the city of Troy, is to deepen his glory. In the text “The Iliad”, Achilles states “Still, I would not die without delivering a stroke or die ingloriously, but in some action memorable to men, in days to come” (79). Achilles is saying how he doesn’t want to die for no reason and how he wants respect and glory. Achilles had chose a short life with glory over a long life without it. However Beowulf, for the most part was selfless, but the amount of glory and his reputation he has in his nation offers that glory was an important factor to his lifestyle. Both …show more content…
Every night Grendel tore the Danes apart, limb by limb and fed on the bodies. Then one day Beowulf defeats Grendel and made the people of the village very happy and he earned a lot of respect. Achilles enemy was Hector. Hector killed Achilles best friend, Patroclus, which caused conflict between Achilles and Hector. Achilles anger builds up and he finally kills Hector then ties his body to a horse chariot and drags his body through the town. It states in “The Iliad”, “Behind both fat he pierced the tendons, heel to ankle. Rawhide cords he drew through both and lashed them to his chariot, letting the mans head trail” (82).
