By maintaining the set rules gives a student an idea of the core values of integrity and a need to have others follow by example. The idea is that having honesty with the work a student will produce and respect for the sources they used be a part of the makeup of “academic integrity rests [the responsibility] with students, and ignorance of the academic integrity system is not an acceptable excuse for violations” ("Responsibility for Academic Integrity"). Giving other people the credit when using their work gives the power to the writer to make a name for themselves. Showing that care, initiative, and simply honoring another’s work give the author credibility and respect for their work. Responsibility is a key factor when expressing integrity, because it can be transferred into other aspects of life.
By striving to achieve the ethical standard that comes from academic integrity you have to show that you value “honesty, trust, fairness, respect, responsibility, and courage” (“ICAI”). It is also best to avoid anything that can be classified as academic dishonesty. By doing this one simple task of upholding academic integrity others take notice and will look at to that person as leader and someone who should be respected. Upholding academic integrity and its core values are not bound to only a classroom setting, but go beyond to the work force and everyday
