Education is probably one of the most important endeavors people can attempt in their life. Studies show those who have a degree of some kind will earn considerably more during their working years than those who do not. Today, college entrance rates are increasing but graduation rates are not following the same pattern. Why are fewer students graduating these days? The problem seems to be a few common key elements: tuition is expensive, not enough counselors keep students on track, and the individual student is not informed of his/her expectations at admittance. An effective way to address the problem of low graduation rates is to lower tuition, offer more academic counselors to the students, establish an automated contact system, and interview …show more content…
Affordability weighs a heavy decision on where a student will attend school. With impending student loan debt and post graduation unemployment rates so high it’s not surprising why price is an issue. If all institutions offered fast track degree programs this would allow the student to compress four years of education into shorter time frames which would equal less money spent by the student. Tuition reduction during certain semesters could also help the average student spend less but still receive a degree. If over half of all college bound seniors rule out their first choice institution based on price alone (“Hanoverresearch.com, 2014”). By doing this it would help a student see what the expectations are of them, and what to expect out of the institution. Being a student at an institution carries a substantial responsibility for the student and institution. Allowing the prospective student to connect with student groups already going through the school can help the prospective student engage and help to retain them long term. Learning can be an issue for high achieving as well as low performing students and different strategies are necessary to meet the needs of all students entering the
