One example Jamal and Arnold are similar is they both have motivation to change. Jamals motivation early in the movie when he was called in the office and was asked to go to the rich school with a full time scholarship in hope he will play basketball. Arnolds motivation to change also came early in the story when Mr.P told him there was nothing on the res for him and he should move on to bigger better things. Arnold kept going 1 v 1 with Roger because he wanted to be accepted by the Basketball team. Jamal gets low grades and spends most his time playing Basketball because that's what his friends do. Another way was when Arnold and Rowdy climb the tree despite Arnold's deathly fear of heights because Rowdy wanted to. Another way was when Jamal takes William to the old baseball stadium that he and his brother used to go before his brother's death which caused him to lock himself away. Arnold and Jamal share several different themes. Such as motivation to change when they both got motivation from adults to change schools, role of education when they change schools for better education/futures, and peer pressure/peer acceptance when they’re accepted by a group of people for a specific reason. This relates to the world well as we often do things just in order to be accepted, either for a girl, friend, group of people, or your parents you’re always striving to be
