Abortion: The Choice Should be Up to Her
Abortion is a huge arguing point in America. Abortion by the medical definition is “The premature extraction of the products of conception, including the fetus, fetal membranes and placenta, from the uterus.” There are two main sides to this argument, pro-life and pro-choice. Pro-life supporters believe that abortion is wrong and it is killing unborn children. Pro-choice supporters believe that the choice to have an abortion should be up to the mother. Women should be able to choose whether or not to get an abortion because she has to carry the baby for nine months, she is the one who has to raise and take care of the child, and she knows the circumstances better than anyone else. When given the option to either abort the child and live, or attempt to carry the child for nine months and then give birth and have a high chance of not surviving, most people would choose to live. There are women who have medical issues that prevent them from being able successfully carry and birth the child. This can create complication for not only the mother, but can increase the child’s chance of birth deformities, low life expectancy and health problems. She is the one who has to spend the time, the money, the energy to take care of the child. If a mother knows she will not be able to give the child a good life, why should have to go through all the pain? For instance, a young teenager gets pregnant. If she keeps the child, she will experience severe damage to her future. Studies show that young mothers frequently drop out of school, rely on welfare to support themselves and the child, and have limited or no career options. They also experience a high rate of depression and other health problems. If abortion could put her life back on a successful track, shouldn’t it be an option for her to choose? Pro-life supporters have argued that instead of abortion, to instead put the child up for adoption. It is true that mothers can put their babies up for adoption if they do not want to keep the child. However, there are so many un-adopted children in the system. In fact, UNICEF estimates that there are 210 million orphans in the world right now.
