For my father a man born in the late 1940s and in Dominican Republic, his definition of a good job was a job that worked with his law degree and politics. Heavily involved in politics my father started a revolution in the late 1960s in order to free his country from a dictator ship for him this definition was an abornmal view of what a job was. His “job” was to fight back a dictator ship, the pay being the last thing on his mind. Once he had left and settled in the United States in the mid 1980s as a lawyer, and an enterupeuer his definition of a “good job” changed dramatically. He starts with explaining that a “good job” is one that pays both medical and regular bills such as electricity and food, and of course having left overs for luxurious expeneses. The pay was what mattered to father and if it did not fit the job he would not take it. Mother mainly worked in an assembly line as she studied for her psychology degree on the side line. Though for her having a “good job” was similar to my father down to almost a T there however being a few differences. She found that having the ability to have workers compensation was important, a strong pay as well, but also to have a long lunch breaks where she could go out for lunch with her other co-workers. She also believed that the idea of having a coffee machine, as well as maybe a Pac Man machine in the break room was always a plus and to be able to take time off work when she had her period was important.
