I designed a pair of ballet shoes that would increase the height of a ballet dancer’s soubresaut. This shoe would be made of canvas because it is lighter than leather. My shoes would have air pockets attached to the bottom which would be covered with another layer of canvas. Typical suede patches would be on the soles of the shoes to provide traction. These shoes would have extra padding and support on the inside to increase the comfortability of the shoe. When the dancer pushes into the ground preparing to jump, the air inside these shoes will compress. Then when the dancer takes off, the air will replace itself inside the air pocket. This will enhance the dancer’s capability to reach greater heights when she/he performs a soubresaut. The

This video “Ballet, Sweat, and Tears” highlights dancers who study ballet at the Vaganova Ballet Academy. One of the thing that I notice is that these young girls spend many hours in hard training and endless castings to show off their perfect form and their talent. Since childhood they give their lives to a professional path through the ballet academies. They are shut away from their own family and friends. These girls don’t have any personal time, their days are given over to endless practice from early morning at seven-thirty until late at night.…

Within my cooperative education placement, my supervisor expressed a desire to create and app for the company Ballet Creole. To show my gratitude for her and the time I spent at the studio, I designed several shots of what an app could possibly look like for them when they had the financials means for it. I presented the app to my supervisor and the Artistic Director, where it was met with much appreciation. Early on at my placement I had trouble understanding how an arts and culture non-profit made sense. Afterwards, I realized the impact it had on community members who loved what Ballet Creole had to offer.…

In the Romantic Era, although the Romantic period did not lack good male dancers, the male took on a lesser role because people were interested by the lighter and shorter skirts and the invention of the pointe shoe during this period. As the male dancer’s status and morale declined, fewer men entered the profession, until in the letter part of the century male dancers were practically reduced to state decoration, and women in travesty played the leading male…

Suzanne Abraham (1996) describes how dancers feel, and what their physical appearance should look like. Researchers have found that among ballet dancers, it is common to have an eating disorder. Dancers want to be thin and have a ballet dancer body, and not everybody is born the same way to have that lean body type. Therefore, girls start bad habits, such as throwing up and not eating, just so they can have that ballet body type. Gelsey Kirkland, a ballet dancer, explains, “I starved by day, then binged on junk food and threw up by night; I took injections of pregnant cows` urine, reputed to be a miraculous diet aid; I stuffed myself with laxatives, thyroid pills, and celery juice; I emptied myself with enemas and steam baths,” (Kirkland &…

From my last year of study, there has not been much that has changed from my perception of ballet. So far, I noticed that I made progress in improving my technique as well as having a clearer focus while learning the combinations in class. I want to improve in whatever way possible to make sure that I can keep on top of my technique, especially since I look forward to striving forward through this semester as a continuation of last semester. On the first day back of the new semester, I already knew that I wanted to break some of the bad habits that I had and wanted to find any way possible to make the goals a primary focus. Even though I have my strengths and weaknesses, I want to further myself this semester to grow as a dancer by breaking some old habits that are holding me back.…

The formation of dance has lived on this world for many generations as we continue to pass through history. When I went to the wonderful performance at Pierce College I experienced a whole new perspective on dancing. The concert had many types of students performing mixed dance projects of all types like solos and duets. There was an average size of one to eight dancers per project which made it the ideal size for the concert. I really enjoyed the creativity and effort put into this performance.…

Hui, Chui, and Woo (2009) describe dance as a choreographed routine of movements usually performed to music. A world wide human activity, dance integrates the coordination of intentional body movements, performed in synchronization with rhythmical stimuli, usually together with other individuals (Murcia, Kreutz, Clift, & Bongard, 2010). Alpert (2011) contends that it is this direct expression of the use of body movements and expressions that makes dance the most fundamental of the arts. Dance can be described in terms of different styles including ballet, jazz, and lyrical (Malkogeorgos, Zaggelidou, & Zaggelidis, 2011) and can be performed in a variety of locations including at home or at a park, with or without any equipment, alone, or with a group, making it…
