In My Last Duchess you listen to the speaker of the story talking to someone, you don’t know who he is talking to either. As you read on you are baffled by what he is saying. You can’t really grasp whether this girl is around or not around. He then says, “This grew; I gave commands; then all smiles stopped together.” (Lines 45-46) This statement blows you away when you read it. You realize he, either directly or indirectly, got rid of her so to speak. The same thing happens in Porphyria’s Lover. The speaker is sitting there, not doing anything, and Porphyria shows up. You don’t really get what he is saying at first but then it hits you like a brick wall. The speaker then decides on what to do, “…I found a thing to do, and all her hair in one long yellow string I wound three times her little throat around, and strangled her.” (Lines 37-41) I think this is the most clear and major similarity between the two poems.
