Essay Of A Nontraditional Student: Personal Statement

As a slightly older nontraditional student, my past life experiences have greatly shaped my ambition to want to major in a STEM related field as well as the need for a more global perspective. Last year, I transferred into Arcadia University from a Community College and decided it was time I finish my studies after taking care of a family member. After participating in one of Arcadia’s preview programs abroad, I developed a whole new appreciation for travel and how life experience can significantly mold a person’s outlook. I want to be able to take the time to study abroad and immerse myself in an academic setting of my choosing, since I’d never had that opportunity in the past. I feel the experience to study abroad is imperative to developing good cultural competency skills, which in the field of STEM is almost always a must.

Being a nontraditional student alone, I feel is a significant challenge in the sense that you have more weighted responsibilities. Prior to enrolling, I had served as the main caretaker for my grandmother who at that point was suffering from Dementia in her 90’s. Though the pressure at times was hard, I wouldn’t go back and change a thing. Earlier this year, my stepfather had also lost his job without any notice, leaving my mother as the sole breadwinner for the family. Currently, I’m a first generation college student in my family. I take great pride in the fact that I’m lucky enough to be attending a good University without carrying major debt and exemplifying responsibility by working three jobs to pay for it on my own. I’ve accepted that hardship is a part of life and that sometimes, it makes you stronger. Giving up was unfortunately never an option for me and despite how hard it got, I was able to pull

I made a vow to myself that my story will not be played out like that, and I made sure it didn’t. at the beginning of college, I was facing financial challenge. Being that I recently moved to the united states, I was not getting full financial aid, so my mom had to work two or more jobs and sometimes barrowed money to pay for my tuition. This summer, my family and I traveled to Berlin, Germany to learn about my Jewish great grandparents’ experience during the Holocaust. After visiting the Topography of Terror, I have become interested in understanding how the Nazis could turn a democracy into a dictatorship. This trip made me question not only government’s actions of the past, but also my government’s actions today. It has made me look at the U.S. 2016 election differently. Most of all, my trip made me want to learn more about Europe in the 20th century.…

Life's a journey worth taking the unbeaten path. That is why, despite looking up to my loving parents and having the utmost respect for them, I have taken a different road than they did. However, undergoing any challenge without their guiding experience can certainly prove to be an undertaking. I, a first generation college student, am the pioneer of higher education for my family. Though I join many others in lunging out into the world for the first time, I am doing so without having a father or mother to tell me how to tackle the college experience.…

On days off, I am busy traveling to other worlds. My morning starts with the the lapping waves of Homer’s wine-dark sea. At lunch, I picnic in the shady groves of Virgil’s Elysian fields, and in the afternoon, I watch the sun set in Orwell’s eerie dystopia. My desire to explore isn’t limited to literary universes, however. It runs deep into my academic pursuits, from humanities to science.…

Since the day I first moved to Madison more than three years ago, I realized that the University of Wisconsin-Madison has a large presence in the community. Everywhere I go, I see the school emblem of the University and the familiar cardinal and white colors. Despite growing up and having a fondness for my old state, California, UW-Madison has captured my attention as a community which I long to be a part of. With the welcoming atmosphere and the ability to discuss current issues anywhere on campus, I can easily fit into the community. As an Asian-American, as an LGBTQ+ individual, as a driven and motivated student, UW-Madison seems to be the logical choice.…

First-generation college students, defined as those students whose parents have no more than a high school education (Pascarella et al., 2004), tend to have lower graduation rates than their non-first generation peers (Stebleton & Soria, ) and are twice as likely to leave 4-year institutions before the second year (Bringle, Hatcher, & Muthiah, 2010). In fact, almost half (43%) of first-generation students entering college leave before completing their degree as compared to 20% of other students (Chen & Carroll, 2005). Even when first-generation college students persist beyond 3 years, they are less likely to earn bachelor’s degrees than their peers (Pascarella et al., 2004) and less likely to enroll in graduate degree programs (Hahs-Vaughn, 2004). Additionally, Vaughan, Parra, & Lalonde (2014) found first-generation students often come from low-income families and ethnically diverse backgrounds typically underrepresented in higher education, for which the statistics on retention and graduation are even worse: only 11% finish a…

Sophomore year was the year that I became really lazy because I believed I had nothing important to do. It was a year where I started to stand up for myself and speak up about situations I didn't approve of. It was also a period of time where I saw the potential that I have, and also showed me how some people can continue to try to make you feel insecure about yourself even when you are doing good things in your life. That year I started Crossfit to get in shape for basketball with my older cousin, Shaun, and I saw one of my old band teachers there. So it was kind of fun to see all these great people come together to work out and push each other.…

Growing up with a culture that's different from my current setting was really confusing. My parents and sisters always assured me that they were going to help. My mom and dad decided to leave their family back in Egypt and end the chapter of their lives to begin mine. This sacrifice pressured me to succeed, knowing that my academic performance will not only affect me, but my parents as well. Being the youngest in my family, I kinda got the "easy" way, but now that I'm all grown up and getting ready for college, I'm ready to break the barrier of being dependent.…

To be completely honest: I just find the idea of writing an honors thesis – a paper built off of and fashioned around months of exciting, extensive research – incredibly electrifying. It might be naïve of me, as I’ve yet to even write an academic paper that surpasses a length of fifteen pages, but I can’t help imagining how holding that finished thesis in your hands must be the most satisfying feeling, and the most thrilling feeling, well worth all of the effort – and all of the hours! – it took you to get to the moment itself. I’m an international student. I took four British A-Levels: Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and – my favorite – English Language & Literature, the last of which is a qualification for which I was required to write a…
