I was really nervous when I met my relatives for the first time, but I was also excited at the same time. We’ve always seen each other through the screens of our phones, but never in person. I was with my aunt for the majority of the trip because she was the one family member I was familiar with in the past because of the video calls we’d have. Because my parents wasn’t physically there with me, I saw my aunt as a parent during the time I stayed at her place and she took care of me as if I were her child. My family was what made my visit to Malaysia so memorable, which is why I quickly grew attached to them.

My parents, my younger sister, and I are the only individuals in the family that live in America due to my parents migrating in search for better job opportunities. My parents’ family didn’t come along and remained in Malaysia because they didn’t want to leave their current lives behind. This meant that my family in America was very small because we were the only ones here. However, in Malaysia, it was a different story.
