Essay Fluctus Per Auras

This summer while I travelled to London, UK, a particular piece of technology based art outside a store called Debenhams (Figure 1) caught my eyes and inspired me to create my own work of art for this course. As seen in Figure 1, the walls of Debenhams use a screen to create a ripple effect or waves through the screen. For my APS 325 final project, I would like to create a fusion between engineering, science and art as well, through the medium of a dynamic sculpture titled “Fluctus per Auras” which translates to Waves by Wind in Latin. The basis for my kinetic sculpture is that wind cannot be seen but only felt. I wish to use the power of wind to create unique shapes and patterns so that viewers can see wind in a physical shape and form. The wind-activated art work uses the speed, direction, and force …show more content…
Additionally, if the artwork was placed in front of an object, anything behind the artwork will be cooler in terms of temperature as the metal sequins reflect light and thereby do not let much heat transfer through the sculpture. The lower power consumption by the micro LED lights enables the kinetic sculpture to maintain its presence even at night. If the same sculpture were to be created on a much larger scale, it could help lower the temperature within a building by several degrees thereby saving electricity costs related to air conditioning which leads to lower carbon emissions. Increasing the magnitude of the sculpture and attaching a power storage device can also harness energy from the wind moving the sequin panels and using the same energy to power the micro-LED lights at night. This artwork is also mimetic in a sense as it aims to recreate waves in the sea on a panel of metal sequins instead and this is also a representation of bio design that is inspired from

To begin, the Capitol 2012 is a three dimensional architectural sculpture created by Deborah Aschheim. The Capitol 2012 was assembled by using an abundance of plastic, adhesive, and Light-Emitting Diodes (LEDs). This three dimensional architectural sculpture took up a form that gives the suggestion of a familiar place. The texture of the plastic was designed with a fine and coarse matter. There were blue LEDs placed within the structure.…

On September 20th, the day of our picnic, God gave us a beautiful day filled with plenty of sunshine and cool breezes. So many of our brothers and sisters from other fraternity’s took part in our annual picnic and shared in Franciscan companionship. As I looked around the grounds of the friary and saw our Franciscan Charism flowing among those in attendance, I thought to myself this is what our Charism is all about, sharing, loving, caring, allowing the Holy Spirit to move in us and through others. Thanks to all for the wonderful job in pulling this picnic together.…

Much to thy surprise, my course of events today became larger than expected! Just this morning, my fellow tradesmen and I paraded the streets of Rome, yet Flavius and Marullus, two tribunes, interrupted our celebrations. Marullus, seemingly in bad spirits like a trapped rat, asked me which trade I performed, which evoked me to answer, “Truly, sir, in respect of a fine workman, I am but, / as you would say, a cobbler” (Act I. Scene I. Lines 10-11). Much to his surprise, however, I also included a pun about shoe soles to reveal his disheartened soul!…

My own understanding of La facultad is an instinct reaction that we used for protect ourselves from threat or unknown. For example, people will freak out when they see a person who act wired in the bank because this person look like a suspect robber. When people encounter something or someone that whatever look suspect or unknown to them, their actions would be without unconsciousness. Rios illustrates this concept in "Translating Translation" by the stories that he states in his essay. First story is his mom wanted the kitchen’s wall to be yellow and she said limon to these Mexican workers.…

After skimming through The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius, he tells readers about his stoicism by repeating several principal concepts. Three of the most reoccurring principal concepts are: keeping your mind calm and serene, you shouldn’t hate or be vengeful towards anyone, and don’t worry about dying. The meaning of one of the most reoccurring concepts, keeping your mind calm and serene, is to stay calm and don't focus on things that don’t regard you. The concept of not being hateful and vengeful means that you shouldn’t despise a person even if they are sinful people because you also have faults. Don’t worry about dying is one of the most reoccurring concepts and it means to not fear death because it’s inevitable and it won’t be painful.…

The Roman Empire was at its highest peak during the reign of Augustus, in which he installed the idea of Pax Romana (meaning Roman peace) to bring peace, security, and civilized life to the Roman nation. However, even in the times of happiness and prosperity not all people welcomed the great Roman peace, as demonstrated by the troubles brewing in Egypt, Gaul, and Judea. As Rome began to falter under the economic, political, and military difficulties, many Romanized nations began to withdraw their support. The Roman nobles, rather than invest their money in the industries of Rome, chose to misuse their wealth, causing the economy to come to a halt. So, by the third century A.D. and the end of Marcus Aurelius reign, which ended Pax Romana, the…

    1. Figure 4.3, Going Home by Jacob Lawrence. This piece was created in 1946, and was painted with gouache, which is an opaque type of watercolor. I personally did not like this piece, I’m not a fan of the medium used, but nevertheless I found it interesting. In my opinion, the low value and intensity of the yellows and greens are unappealing, I think they make this train or bus seem outdated and old, or just dirty.…

Galileo Galilei’s essay called “Corpuscularianism” from his book The Assayer offers an extensive argument supporting his belief that motion is the cause of heat. He describes the key role motion plays in creating heat through pointing out how motion affects the other senses such as taste and smell. However, Galilei’s stance does not come without opposition, as I will criticize his over-simplistic and contradictory explanation for how we sense the world around us. Galileo begins by differentiating between primary and secondary qualities. He states that objects necessarily have shape, size, place, motion, contact, and number (primary qualities,) but they do not necessarily have color, taste, sound, smell, or feel (secondary qualities.)…

I never intended to study architecture. When I was applying to colleges, I intended to study kinesiology and psychology. Studying dance and photography when I was younger gave me a desire to be expressive, and even though I felt a connection to the physicality of dance through kinesiology, I knew I wanted to do something that fulfilled that same sense of expression. It wasn’t until I studied architecture that I noticed some of its similarities with dance. Dance is expressive of the body, but it is also an observation of people’s interaction with each other and with their surroundings, a study of people’s movement through space.…
