Essay Comparing Two Disney Movies

E.E. Cummings once said, “It takes courage to grow up and turn out to be who you really are.” All young boys come face to face with the changes involved in growing up. At some point, boyhood stops and manhood begins. Theodore Roosevelt said, “The boy who is going to make a great man must not make up his mind merely to overcome a thousand obstacles, but to win in spite of a thousand repulses and defeats.” The transition from boy to man is not an easy one. Two Disney movies come to mind as the idea of growth to maturity surfaces. The first movie is Mulan. Mulan takes a slightly different spin on the idea of finding maturity and responsibility. Mulan is a girl who is determined to become a brave warrior and to fight for her family’s honor. She must disguise herself as a man, and she hopes that her master teacher will not see through her plan. Mulan shows extreme self-confidence and motivation. She does not have someone forcing her towards “manhood.” Mulan willingly makes the choice to take on this difficult task. …show more content…
Mowgli is a typical young boy, but his circumstances are not ordinary. Mowgli is in the care of a group of gentle, caring jungle animals. Baloo, the bear, shows great concern for Mowgli and fears that if returned to the human world, the humans would make a man out of him. According to Mowgli’s animal caretakers, becoming a man is a horrible fate. Baloo thinks the humans would ruin the wonderful boy that Mowgli has become. The animals like Baloo have a moral order that they see as being superior to that of the humans. These jungle animals may live through instinct and resort to violent protection, but so do the humans. The problem is that the animals’ way is necessary for their survival, but the humans have the ability to choose between good and evil. The jungle animals see the humans choosing evil way too

In the movie, Mr. and Mrs. Stevenson’s lives are elaborated on through the use of flashbacks that display Mrs. Stevenson’s spoiled attitude and her husband’s reluctant complacency, thicken the plot, and music, lighting, and camera angles that build suspense, making the film soar above the screenplay. Compared to the movie, the script is a kindergartner’s ratty piece of art, whereas the film is a masterpiece in brilliant color. The film strays from the path of its written companion by adding a more complex plot line, yet it keeps the main issue the same. Supposedly, the main character in the story, Mowgli, is meant to represent the British. Mowgli overcomes his enemy Shere Khan, which establishes order in a place of corruption and deceit much like England did for India (Litz, Ann, and Randall, Don). This young child who was raised in the jungle by a pack of wolves is energetic and schooled in the codes of the Law, is the alien liberator whose final victory represents the establishment of just rule in the place of an ostensibly corrupt and decrepit Mughal dynasty. As the rebel Sepoys of 1857 looked to Bahadur Shah for leadership, so, during a troubled period of interregnum within the Seeonee pack, restless young wolves rally around Shere Khan and turn against Mowgli. Just as the British, in 1858, put an end to the symbolic kingship of Bahadur Shah, so Mowgli puts an end to the lame tiger's pretensions to power.…

Shrek the movie and the short story “Beauty and the Beast” are both fairy tales very similar in ways that bring the characters closer to reality. “Beauty and the Beast” written by Mme Le Prince de Beaumont has a happily ever after fairy tale ending, whereas the movie Shrek directed by Andrew Adamson and Vicky Jenson and produced by Jeffrey Katzenberg, Aron Warner and John H. Williams in 2001, is more of a not so happily ever after. The movie Shrek came from the fairy tale theme of William Steig’s book “Shrek!”. “Beauty and the Beast” is a traditional fairy tale considered to be the most symbolic fairy tale after Cinderella. Both are about two people looking past appearances to find their true love that is right in front of them all along.…
