What does every horror protagonist have in common? The answer to that is every horror protagonist’s life is a tragedy. Some are worse than others but in the end it is still tragic. This essay is about the similarities and difference between two horror stories. “The Tell Tale Heart” by Edgar Allen Poe and “ The Monkey’s Paw” by W.W Jacobs. One difference is that the both stories have the same settings. Both of these stories take place in a house and this affects the stories in a few ways. Though “The Monkey’s Paw” character death was an accident unlike the character death in“The Tell Tale Heart”. For Example in “The Monkey’s Paw” on page 112, line 248 the author says, “She broke off suddenly as the sinister meaning of the assurance dawned upon her and she saw the awful confirmation of her fears in the other’s averted face.” This tells you that she just realised that the monkey’s paw killed their son in order to give them the two hundred pounds. So what that means is that she did not know that the monkey’s paw would kill their son and that means that his death was an accident and she regrets making the wish. While “The Tell Tale Heart” on page , line the author says, “First I dismembered the corpse. I cut off the head and the arms and the legs.“ This tells you that the narrator intended to kill the old man and even dismembered his body so that he can hide it which shows how he intended to kill him.. So that tells you that the old man’s death was no accident unlike “The Monkey’s Paw”. This is important because it affects how the characters feel over the death of a character like how in “The Monkey’s Paw” the Whites were sad that their son died, but in “The Tell Tale Heart” the narrator was happy and satisfied that the old man died. In short both stories have a character die, but in “The Monkey’s Paw” the character death was an accident unlike the death in “The Tell Tale …show more content…
“The Tell Tale Heart” has a first person perspective and speaks directly with the readers, while “The Monkey’s Paw” has a third person perspective. For example in “The Tell Tale Heart” on page 89, line 1 the narrator says, “True!-nervous-very,very dreadfully nervous I had been and am! But will you say that I am mad?” This shows how “The Tell Tale Heart” is in first person because the narrator is using words like I and is talking about himself and how nervous he is. This also tells you that the narrator is addressing the reader because he uses words like you and he also ask the readers a question about his sanity. In “The Monkey’s Paw” on page 105, line 1 the author says, “Without, the night was cold and wet, but in the small parlor of Laburnum Villa the blinds were drawn and the fire burned brightly. Father and son were at chess; the former, who possessed ideas about the game involving radical changes, putting his king into such sharp and unnecessary perils that it even provoked comment from the white-haired old lady knitting placidly by the fire.” This shows you that the story is in third person because the narrator said father and son not I see father and son or Playing chess with my son the narrator just says father and son. The narrator does not address himself or ask the readers any questions like in “The Tell Tale Heart”. This is important because perspective changes what you know for example in
