A common theme in comedies is love conquers all. Both of these comedies portray this theme. For instance, in The Importance of Being Earnest both of the women forgive the men for deceiving them, when they figure out that the men had good intentions behind what they had done. Love found a way even through the lies and deception. Tootsie portrayed the theme love conquers all in a similar way. Michael finally tells the truth after lying for so long. The main character in Tootsie, Michael Dorsey goes into disguise as Dorothy a woman. Whereas in The Importance of Being Earnest the main character is John Worthing, John goes into disguise as Earnest Worthing. Even though they are similar because they pretend to be something they are not, they both do this for different reasons. Michael in Tootsie is disguised as a woman to get a job. He eventually learns that women are not respected. He learns from his experience empathy and respect for others. In The Importance of Being Earnest John is disguised as Earnest, he does this because he is bored. Through this experience he learns the true meaning of being "earnest." Although the two main characters both went into disguise, they did it for different reasons and came out with a happy ending, proving the theme again love conquers
