In 12 Years A Slave, Solomon finds himself sold into a world of slavery where treatment was generally characterized by brutality, degradation, and inhumanity. Whippings, executions, and rapes were commonplace and slaves were usually denied educational opportunities, such as learning how to read or write, features reinforced by Steve McQueen through the inclusion of brutal beatings to remind Solomon of his place in society. In The Hunger Games, the capitol takes kids from their districts, forcing them to kill one another while the nation watches, this is the Capitol’s way of reminding us how totally there are at their mercy. How little chance they would stand of surviving another rebellion. The main purpose of the games is to remind the Districts how weak they are and that their deaths are basically televised entertainment. In this sense, the Games are a form of control.
12 Years A Slave, directed by Steve McQueen, and The Hunger Games, written by Suzanne Collins, details the protagonist, Katniss Everdeen and Solomon Northup, struggle to survive against all odds and overcoming the position they find themselves in from people in power.
