“Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou, Romeo?” These are words spoken by Juliet in both versions of the movie Romeo and Juliet produced by Franco Zeffirilli in 1968 and Baz Luhrmann in 1996. Both the masquerade ball and the balcony scenes portray the characters of Romeo and Juliet very differently as well as the overall production of the adapted versions of the plays. The masquerade ball takes place in the Capulet household, and that is about as far as the similarities go between the films.…

Prior to writing this essay I read and watched three different versions of the classic story of Romeo and Juliet; these being William Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, Romeo and Juliet the 1968 movie and Romeo and Juliet the 1996 movie. Throughout them I noticed that they shared many similarities as well as many differences. In this essay I will compare and contrast some of the minor and major details of them. All three versions share the same characters; some being Romeo, Juliet, Paris, Tybalt, Mercutio and Friar Laurence.…

Both stories end with a fight and at least one death. In West Side Story, Tony has been killed by Chino out of hate, and in Romeo and Juliet Romeo has killed himself out of apparent grief for Juliet. Tony's death could be considered a suicide for the fact that he went out searching for his killer, but he did not actually kill himself like Romeo did. Upon finding Romeo dead, Juliet also kills herself, finding life not worth living without him. Maria however acts maturely and stands up for what she believes was the cause of all the deaths that took place throughout the play, which was the hate between the two gangs.…

West Side Story is often hailed as a modern-day Romeo and Juliet. This is true to an extent -- WSS was based directly off of it, so they do have very similar stories. However, the details, which are arguably what matter most, are vastly different between the two. Firstly, WSS is missing huge chunks of R&J’s story.…

Leonardo DiCaprio once said “To believe in love, to be ready to give up anything for it, to be willing to risk your life for it, is the intimate tragedy”. In Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, Romeo falls in love with the enemy, Juliet leading the two individuals to go against their family values and principles of the rival. This is like the musical West Side Story by Arthur Laurents, Tony and Maria go against the ideals of their two separate rival gangs to be in love. They represent how the individual lovers are prevented and interfered with the rival families. In both stories, the protagonists from two rival groups go against their authority to be together and in love.…

The Catcher In The Rye Book by: J.D. Salinger Book Report by: Isabella Melton The Catcher In The Rye is a novel set in the 1950s in New York City, narrated by the protagonist Holden Caulfield. Holden is sixteen years old, and although he seems mature at some points in the novel, he is very immature, judgemental, and rude. Despite having childish characteristics, he believes he looks much older than he actually is, because he is tall and has some gray hair. Holden is judgemental because he thinks that almost everyone around him is a phony. He hates their seemingly ingenuous conversations, how they treat him, and their overall “phoniness”, which makes the phonies the antagonists.…

Obviously the two directors Franco Zeffirelli and Baz Luhrmann had a great respect for the language used by the creator of the original play “Romeo and Juliet” William Shakespeare because they seemed to keep it very similar in both of their films. Also they both use violence and weapons, only difference is that the fighting style and weapons were more advanced in Baz Luhrmann’s 1997 act. Both versions take place in the inner or main part of the city. Most of the time you will catch the Capulet’s mainly in red clothing, on the other side you see the Montague’s in blues and purples. These are some of the similarities between the two versions of William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet”.…

From the beginning we are told, "Verona was being torn by a terrible, bloodthirsty feud which no human endeavor had been able to settle [. . .]" (Charlton 147). In the play and the movie, Romeo and Juliet are similar to all victims of tragedy. Both characters "are isolated-even from each other-before they are destroyed" (Goldman 167). In the play and the movie, their families' names, Romeo's banishment from Verona, and the poison separate them. The feud "was the direct cause of the death of the lovers, and but for those deaths it never would have been healed" (Charlton…
