The main character in “The Most Dangerous Game” is a man named Sanger Rainsford who is a big-game hunter. He is accompanied by a few fellow hunters sailing on the ocean minding his own business when in an instant an unfortunate accident causes him to go overboard. This ultimately lands him in a very unfortunate situation that is initially out of his control. In the passage that states, “He struggled to the surface and tried to cry out” (Connell, 1924) it is clear to the reader that he is desperate for help to get out of the dilemma he is now in. There is no question that he obviously did not choose to lose his balance and ultimately be forced to fight for his life on Ship-Trap Island. This unfortunate turn of events forced him to make some hard choices to insure his own survival. In comparison when reading the story of “Young Goodman Brown” it is obviously similar in that the main character is a male that has to also make moral choices involving the battle between good and evil. However, when reading where Young Goodman Brown stated to his wife “…this one night must I tarry away from thee” (Hawthorne, 1835), while he does use the word “must”, it is clear that this is a conscience choice that he is making. He chose to leave his new wife of only three short months to go off into a questionable situation (Hawthorne, 1835).
