Sometimes, people have to say goodbye to someone or something they love. When this happens, it is important to hold onto old memories. This lesson is addressed in the text, “All Summer in A Day,” and the song, “See You Again.” In “All Summer in a Day,” a young girl named Margot has been deprived of her wonderful experiences with the sun and wishes to see it again after moving to Sunless, rainy Venus. In “See You Again,” Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth express the feelings of a person who has lost someone apart of their life. Both of these texts use the craft move of flashbacks to uncover the theme. First, a similarity found in these texts is how they both convey a similar theme using an alike craft move. In the song, Wiz Khalifa raps, “Who

“All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury, is a science fiction short story. Bradbury included a one of a kind setting, superior characterization, and an ending that allowed readers to create their own, using their imagination. The setting was unique and I would have never thought of an imaginable place like Venus. Margot is a shy and frail young girl and we notice this when Bradbury describes that she is an “old photograph” and talks like a “ghost.” Over the years, good short stories and novels have been transitioned into movie adaptation.…

Though Denzel Washington won an Oscar for Training Day in 2001, Sexton contends that this was merely an “awkward…cultural redress” for the lack of proper acknowledgement regarding his work in “respectable” black roles, such as Malcolm X (40). By rewarding a rather stereotypically fraught performance with the highest acting honor, the Academy sends a rather disturbing message regarding what they “deem accomplished black cinema” (45). Though Fuqua is a black director who “may call the shots,” the “financial underwriters…have the first and final word;” and unfortunately, “production…remains firmly a white monopoly” (48; 47). With Hollywood maintaining an overly “white-washed” executive head, we are rewarded with black representations that merely…

Once you experience something of such great significance, it is hard to let that go and move on. This universal theme can be seen in both the song “Want You Back” by 5 Seconds of Summer, and the short story “All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury. In “Want You Back” the band sings about a girl whom they have left and will always want back. In “All Summer in a Day” the author tells a story about students on Venus, who are in the absence of the sun, and are grieving the loss of it too. In both of these selections, the band and the author use imagery and repetition to convey the theme.…

"Life is a matter of perspective" (Gray, n.d.). This quote by Stephen Gray illustrates that people need to look at the positives of their life instead of the negatives. About 1/3 of the innocent Jewish population was killed, slaughtered, beaten, for their beliefs alone. Imagine being in the shoes of Elie from the novel Night and Joshua from the movie, "Life is Beautiful." Being at such a young age, they both had to grow up faster than most kids their age.…
