Essay Comparing A Rose For Emily And The Cask Of Amontillado

All authors use different techniques in order to improve their story. One technique they use are literary devices. Two stories for example that use these literary devices are “A Rose For Emily” and “The Cask Of Amontillado”. “In the Rose For Emily” the story takes place in a post civil war jefferson,a small town in the deep south of the united states,while “The Cask Of Amontillado” take place in an underground catacombs somewhere in Italy during the carnival season. In the two stories “A Rose For Emily” written by William Faulkner and “The Cask Of Amontillado written” by Edgar Allan Poe they share similarities and differences in plot,character and author writing style. The most obvious plot similarity between William Faulkner's short story, "A Rose for Emily," and Edgar Allan Poe's story, "The Cask of Amontillado," is that they are both, to some degree, about murder. Both are completely self-centered. They are concerned only with their own needs and feelings. Both characters are obsessed with meeting their own emotional needs by any means. Neither Emily nor Montresor cares about the impact of their actions upon others. Neither exhibits any sympathy for their victims. There is no sympathy or empathy. In modern psychological terminology, both Emily and Montresor are anti-social personalities: sociopaths.The difference in the characters are they both had completely different reason why in their mind murder was the only choice. Montresor who felt that Fortunato had given him a thousand injuries by insulting him a point that Montresor believes is too far, Emily committed murder simply for unobtainable love something seen by the pillow that place near Homer's body which seemed to evidence that someone had been lying with
